Before starting a proctored exam on Nexam, check whether a microphone is required for your session. This information appears in two places: on your exam card in the dashboard, and during the camera and microphone authorization step.
If a microphone is required, you must have a working microphone for the entire duration of the exam.
1. Check your exam card
In your dashboard, open the card for the exam you need to take.
The card shows the proctoring options enabled for your exam, such as:
camera
microphone
screen sharing
navigation restriction
secondary monitoring
If microphone is shown as required, you must use a device with a working microphone.
2. Check during camera and microphone authorization
At the beginning of the exam, Nexam asks you to authorize access to your camera and microphone.
If the microphone is required for your exam, it must be allowed by your browser and detected by Nexam. You must then speak or make a sound so Nexam can confirm that the microphone is capturing audio properly.
If no sound is detected, the microphone test fails and a warning appears. You will not be able to continue normally until a working microphone is detected.
3. If the microphone is required but does not work
If the microphone test fails:
make sure your microphone is properly connected or enabled
make sure the correct microphone is selected on your computer
make sure your browser allows microphone access for Nexam
try using a headset with a microphone
try another compatible browser
use another compatible device if needed
To check or update your browser or system permissions, see the article: Allow camera, microphone, and screen sharing for a Nexam exam.
4. If you are blocked before the exam
If your exam is imminent, in progress, or blocked at the technical verification step, contact support during opening hours.
Remember If a microphone is required for your exam, you must have a working microphone during the exam. If no sound is detected, this may prevent the exam from starting or continuing normally.
