Check whether your camera, microphone, and screen sharing are active during an exam

Understand how to check the status of required captures during a monitored Nexam exam.

During a monitored exam

During a monitored evaluation, Nexam continues capturing the elements required by your session configuration.

Depending on your evaluation, monitoring may include:

  • Screen sharing

  • Camera

  • Microphone

You must keep the required captures active until you submit your copy.

You must not:

  • Turn off your camera

  • Stop screen sharing

  • Mute your microphone if it is required

  • Remove browser permissions during the exam

  • Ignore a reactivation request displayed by Nexam

Use the monitoring widget

During the exam, a monitoring widget may appear in your Nexam interface.

This widget helps you check the status of the required captures during the exam.

It may show whether:

  • Screen sharing is active

  • The camera is active

  • The microphone is active, if required

When the captures are working, the widget shows an Active status.

If a capture becomes inactive

If a required capture becomes inactive, Nexam may display an action request.

In that case, follow the on-screen instructions to reactivate the required shares.

For example, Nexam may ask you to:

  • Reactivate the camera

  • Reactivate the microphone

  • Share your screen again

  • Confirm browser permissions

Important: If a required share stops, writing may be temporarily blocked until the required captures are restarted.

Reactivate the required shares

If Nexam asks you to reactivate shares:

  1. Click Activate shares

  2. Allow the camera, microphone, or screen sharing if your browser asks for permission

  3. For screen sharing, choose Entire screen

  4. Click the image of your screen

  5. Click Share

  6. Wait for Nexam to confirm that the captures are active

Important: If full-screen sharing is required, do not choose only a window or a browser tab.

If you use an external camera

If you use an external camera:

  • Make sure it is properly connected

  • Check that it is detected by your computer

  • Close other applications that may be using the camera

  • Select the correct camera if Nexam or your browser asks you to do so

  • Restart the check if Nexam displays an error

If you leave the writing environment and come back later

If you leave the writing environment without submitting your copy and come back later, the required captures will need to be activated again before you can continue.

This may also happen after:

  • Refreshing the browser

  • Signing back in to Nexam

  • Closing the browser by accident

  • Returning to a copy that is still in Writing status

Key takeaway

  • The monitoring widget helps you check whether the required captures are active

  • If a capture becomes inactive, follow the instructions displayed in Nexam

  • Writing may be temporarily blocked if a required share stops

  • The camera, microphone, and screen sharing must remain active when required

  • If you return to your copy later, you may need to reactivate the shares
