Code error for camera, microphone or screen sharing in Nexam

Help participants understand and resolve error codes related to the camera, microphone and screen sharing.

What is this article for?

This article helps you understand the error codes that may appear when you need to share your screen, camera or microphone in Nexam.

These errors may appear during the technical test, in the exam introduction or during a monitored exam.

What should I do first if an error appears?

Before looking at the specific error code, please complete the following checks.

Use a supported and up-to-date browser, ideally Chrome or Edge. Also make sure your operating system is up to date.

Close any applications that may already be using your camera, microphone or screen, such as Teams, Zoom, Meet or screen recording software.

Refresh the page, then try sharing again. If the issue continues, fully close your browser and open it again. If needed, restart your computer.

If you are using a computer provided by a school, company or organization, some permissions may be blocked. In that case, you may need help from your IT team.

Important information about the camera and microphone

A camera working in an installed application on your computer, such as the Windows Camera app, Teams or the desktop version of Zoom, does not guarantee that it will also work in Nexam. Nexam uses your camera and microphone through the web browser. The way the browser accesses these devices is different from an installed application.

The technology used by Nexam is based on current web browser standards. This type of issue is not specific to Nexam. It can also happen in other tools that use the camera through a browser, such as Google Meet or Microsoft Teams web version.

Even if your device meets the technical requirements, some settings may prevent the camera or microphone from working properly. For example:

  • Browser permissions

  • System settings

  • Security software

  • Device drivers

  • Operating system-specific issues

To check whether the issue is related to Nexam or to camera access in the browser, test your camera in a web-based tool, such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams web version or webcamtests.com.

If the camera does not work in these web-based tools, the issue is likely related to your device, browser, permissions or network.

How do I allow the camera, microphone or screen?

When your browser asks for permission, click Allow.

If the request does not appear, open the site settings to the left of the web address. Make sure the camera, microphone or screen sharing is allowed, then refresh the page.

If sharing is still blocked, reset the site permissions, then allow the sharing again when the browser asks.

You can also consult the following article.

An error code helps identify the likely cause of the issue more quickly.

Some codes are related to permissions. Others are related to the browser, device, microphone, camera, screen sharing or system configuration.

RECORDER_INCOMPLETE_STARTUP

This error means that the recording of the captures did not start properly. It may affect the camera, screen sharing or another video source used during monitoring.

Try activating the captures again. If the error comes back, refresh the page, restart the required sharing and close any applications using the camera, microphone or screen.

If the issue continues, restart the browser, then restart the computer.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_NOT_SUPPORTED

This error means that the browser does not allow the screen sharing required by Nexam.

Use a supported and up-to-date browser, ideally Chrome or Edge.

Also make sure that no extension, security suite, antivirus or network policy is blocking screen sharing in the browser.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED

This error means that screen sharing was refused or blocked.

You must allow screen sharing in the browser and in your device settings.

On macOS, check the privacy settings related to screen recording.

After changing this permission, you may need to close and reopen the browser.

Then restart screen sharing and accept the permission when the window appears.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_NOT_READABLE

This error means that the screen sharing source is not accessible. The source may be used by another application or blocked by screen recording software, meeting software or remote control software.

Close any applications that could use or block screen sharing.

Then refresh the page and try again.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_NOT_FOUND

This error means that no screen sharing source was found.

Make sure your screen is working normally.

If you are using an external screen, unplug it and plug it back in. Avoid complex display setups, such as virtual screens or some remote desktop software.

If the issue continues, restart the browser, then restart the computer.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_OVERCONSTRAINED

This error means that the browser cannot start screen sharing with the current configuration of your device. This may happen if your display setup is unstable or unusual, for example with an external screen, a virtual screen, remote desktop software or a browser that is not up to date.

Disconnect external screens if possible, keep only one screen active, then try screen sharing again.

If the error comes back, update your browser, restart the computer, then try again.

You can also try with another supported browser or another device.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_INCOMPLETE_STARTUP

This error means that screen sharing did not finish starting.

This may happen if you click several times, cancel the window too quickly or if the browser becomes stuck.

Wait a few seconds, refresh the page, then restart screen sharing only once. If the issue continues, restart the browser.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_DISPLAY_SURFACE_FORBIDDEN

This error means that you shared a window or tab instead of sharing your full screen.

Restart screen sharing and choose the Entire screen option in the browser window. Then confirm the sharing.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_MULTIPLE_SCREENS_FORBIDDEN

This error means that more than one screen was detected, while the exam requires only one screen.

Disconnect external screens or disable additional displays in your device settings.

Keep only one screen active, then restart screen sharing.

SCREEN_CAPTURE_ERROR

This error indicates a general issue when starting screen sharing.

Refresh the page and restart sharing.

Close any applications that may interfere with screen sharing.

If the issue continues, try another supported browser or another device.

CAMERA_CAPTURE_NOT_SUPPORTED

This error means that the browser does not allow the camera to be used as required by Nexam.

Use a supported and up-to-date browser: Chrome or Edge.

Also make sure that no extension, security suite or organization policy is blocking access to the camera.

CAMERA_CAPTURE_PERMISSIONS_INACCESSIBLE

This error means that the browser cannot check the camera or microphone permissions.

Check the site permissions in the browser. Also check your device privacy settings for the camera and microphone.

If your device is managed by an organization, an internal policy may block these permissions. In that case, contact your IT team or try another compatible device.

CAMERA_MIC_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED

This error means that both the camera and microphone were refused.

Open the site settings in your browser and allow the camera and microphone.

Also check your device privacy settings.

Then refresh the page and restart the capture activation.

CAMERA_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED

This error means that the camera was refused.

Allow the camera in the browser site settings.

Also check your device privacy settings.

Close any applications that are already using the camera, then refresh the page and try again.

MIC_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED

This error means that the microphone was refused.

Allow the microphone in the browser site settings. Also check your device privacy settings.

Make sure the correct microphone is selected in the system and in the browser, then restart the capture.

CAMERA_CAPTURE_OVERCONSTRAINED

This error means that the selected camera is no longer available or cannot be used with the current settings.

This may happen if an external camera is unplugged, if the laptop lid is closed or if the browser tries to use a camera that is no longer accessible.

Make sure the camera is properly connected and active. Close any applications using it, then refresh the page and restart the capture.

CAMERA_CAPTURE_INCOMPLETE_STARTUP

This error means that the camera started to activate, but the startup did not finish properly.

Wait a few seconds before trying again. Avoid clicking the activation button several times.

Close any applications using the camera, then refresh the page. If the error comes back, restart the browser or the computer.

AUDIO_TRACK_NOT_FOUND

This error means that no usable microphone was found.

Make sure a microphone is built into or connected to your device.

Make sure it is enabled in your system settings and selected in the browser.

If no microphone is available, you will need to use another compatible device or contact your exam administrator.

CAMERA_CAPTURE_ERROR

This error indicates a general issue when starting the camera.

This message does not necessarily mean that permissions were refused. When permissions are refused or blocked, Nexam usually displays a more specific code, such as CAMERA_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED, MIC_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED or CAMERA_MIC_CAPTURE_PERMISSION_DECLINED.

In this case, Nexam cannot capture the video stream from the camera or properly initialize the required stream.

Important: this code may also appear when a microphone is missing or inaccessible. Even though the code mentions the camera, you should also check that the microphone is present and working.

  • First, check whether the camera works in a web browser, for example with Google Meet, Microsoft Teams web version or webcamtests.com. A camera working in an installed application is not enough to confirm that it works in the browser.

  • Close any applications that may already be using the camera or microphone, such as Teams, Zoom, Meet, screen recording software or a remote control tool.

  • Make sure the camera and microphone are allowed in the browser for the Nexam site.

  • Make sure the camera and microphone are allowed in your computer privacy settings.

  • Confirm that a microphone is present, active and recognized by the browser.

  • Update the browser and operating system.

  • Fully restart the computer, then run the test again.

On macOS, completely remove the camera permissions for Chrome or for the browser being used, then restart the sharing process in Nexam. After some browser updates, permissions may not be applied correctly.

On Windows 11, check whether the device is officially compatible with Windows 11. Some forced installations on unsupported machines may cause camera stability issues.

If the device is managed by a school, company or organization, a security suite or internal policy may block access to the camera or microphone. In that case, contact your IT team.

If the camera works correctly in a web-based tool, but the error continues in Nexam, contact support with the error code displayed.

TypeError: Cannot read properties of null (reading 'warmup')

This error may appear when the exam uses camera-based validation, such as face detection or identity validation. It means that the video detection module cannot start in the browser.

The device may not support the required video analysis, or some browser, system or driver updates may be missing.

Restart the browser, then the computer. Install any available updates, then run the full technical test again.

If the issue continues, use another compatible computer or contact your exam administrator.
