What are the technical requirements for?
Before you begin an assessment, Nexam checks that your device, browser, and connection can support it.
Some validations are performed for all assessments, with or without proctoring. Others apply depending on the proctoring settings configured for the session.
These validations help detect issues such as an unstable connection, insufficient upload speed, a network restriction, an upload problem, insufficient available space on the device, or a problem preventing the browser from properly saving the data required for the assessment.
If a blocking validation fails, you must resolve the issue before you can proceed to the assessment.
What should I do if a validation fails?
Start by clicking Run validation again in Nexam.
If the error persists, check the name of the requirement that is failing and follow the corresponding recommendations below. After each correction, run the validation again to confirm that the issue has been resolved.
We also recommend using an up-to-date version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
Connection to Nexam
This validation confirms that your browser can connect to the Nexam platform over the Internet.
If this validation fails, first make sure your Internet connection is active. You can try opening other websites to confirm that your Internet access is working.
If you are using a VPN, temporarily disable it and run the validation again. Some browser extensions, such as ad blockers or privacy tools, can also block certain connections. You can temporarily disable them.
If you are using a school, institutional, or corporate network, a firewall may be blocking access to Nexam. In this case, contact your IT team.
Primary upload
This validation confirms that your browser can send data to Nexam.
If it fails, your connection may allow you to open Nexam while blocking the transmission of certain data. This type of restriction may be caused by a firewall, antivirus software, security software, or a browser extension.
Start by performing the same checks as for the connection to Nexam: Internet connection, VPN, extensions, and browser version.
If the issue persists, try another network, such as a mobile hotspot. This can help determine whether the issue is related to the network you are using.
Upload speed
The Upload speed validation measures your connection’s ability to send data to Nexam. It is performed for all assessments, with or without proctoring.
The results are interpreted as follows:
Below 2 Mbps: the validation fails and access to the assessment is blocked.
Between 2 and 5 Mbps: a warning is displayed. You may continue, but your connection is slower than recommended.
Above 5 Mbps: the validation is successful.
If the validation fails, close applications that are using significant bandwidth, check your Internet connection, and try another network when possible. Then click Run validation again.
These thresholds determine whether your connection allows you to proceed to the assessment. They do not replace Nexam’s general recommended technical requirements.
Connection stability
The Connection stability validation checks that exchanges between your device and Nexam remain functional during several consecutive checks.
It is performed for all assessments, with or without proctoring.
A connection can have good speed while still experiencing interruptions. If Nexam detects an unstable connection, the validation fails and access to the assessment is blocked.
If this validation fails:
Make sure your Internet connection is stable.
Close applications that are using your Internet connection.
Restart your modem or router if needed.
Try another network when possible.
Click Run validation again.
Secondary upload
This validation confirms that video data can be sent to the secure storage space used by Nexam.
It applies when video proctoring is required for the session. If it fails, video data may not be transmitted correctly during the assessment.
If you are using a school, institutional, or corporate network, a firewall or security policy may be blocking this transfer.
Try another network, such as a mobile hotspot. If the issue persists on a managed network, contact your IT team.
Available space
This validation checks whether the browser reports that enough space is available to temporarily store video data before it is sent to Nexam.
This space acts as a buffer. It is useful if your connection slows down or is interrupted during the assessment.
This validation applies when proctoring requires video data to be recorded.
Status | Meaning | Recommended action |
Passed | More than 1 GB of space is available. | No action is required. You can continue. |
Warning | Between 500 MB and 1 GB of space is available. | The assessment can continue, but available space is limited. We recommend freeing up space before you begin. |
Failed | Less than 500 MB of space is available, or the browser cannot check the available local space. | You must free up space or use a compatible browser before continuing. |
To free up space, you can empty the Recycle Bin or Trash, delete large files, close unnecessary applications, or clear your browser cache.
It is preferable to use a normal browser window rather than a private browsing window. Some browsers limit the amount of available space in private browsing mode.
Follow these steps in order
Free up space on the computer.
Close Chrome and restart it after freeing up space.
Clear the browser cache.
Run the validation again.
Restart the computer if the issue persists.
Try another device if needed.
Data recording
For some assessments with proctoring, Nexam also performs a validation called Data recording.
This validation complements the Available space check. A browser may report that enough space is available while still being unable to save data correctly.
The Data recording validation checks that Nexam can:
temporarily save data in the browser’s local storage;
read the saved data correctly;
confirm that the data read back matches the data that was saved;
delete the data used for the test.
This validation is blocking when it applies. If it fails, you cannot proceed to the assessment until the issue is resolved.
Unable to load the test
The file required to perform the validation could not be downloaded. The issue may be related to your Internet connection, a firewall, or a proxy.
The Primary upload and Secondary upload validations may also fail in this situation.
Follow these steps in order
Check your Internet connection.
Check the Primary upload and Secondary upload validations.
Resolve the network issue first.
Run the validation again.
Unable to save data on this device
The browser is unable to save the data. This may be caused by insufficient disk space, corrupted storage, or site data being blocked by a privacy extension, antivirus software, or an organizational policy.
Follow these steps in order
Restart the computer.
Open Nexam in a private browsing window and run the validation again.
If the validation succeeds in private browsing, disable any privacy extensions or antivirus software that may be blocking site data, then run the test again in a normal browser window.
If the issue persists, try another compatible browser.
If the issue still persists, try another device.
Unable to read the saved data
The data was saved successfully, but it cannot be read back. The storage may be unstable or corrupted.
Follow these steps in order
Restart the computer.
Open Nexam in a private browsing window and run the validation again.
If the issue persists, try another compatible browser.
Try another device.
The data read back does not match the data that was saved
The data was read back incomplete or altered. This may indicate an issue with the device’s local storage.
Follow these steps in order
Restart the computer.
Open Nexam in a private browsing window and run the validation again.
If the issue persists, try another compatible browser.
Try another device.
The Data recording validation can detect a storage issue that is already present when the assessment is opened. It cannot detect a failure that occurs later during the assessment.
Single tab
This validation confirms that no other Nexam tab is already open while you are preparing to begin the assessment.
If another Nexam tab is detected, access to the assessment is blocked until that tab is closed.
This validation helps prevent issues that may occur when the browser puts a tab to sleep during a proctored assessment.
If this validation fails, close all other Nexam tabs open in your browser, then run the validation again.
If you are not sure whether another Nexam tab is open, completely close your browser, reopen Nexam in a single tab, and run the validation again.
Follow these steps in order
Close any other open Nexam tabs.
Run the validation again.
Completely close the browser, then reopen it.
Sign back in to Nexam using a single tab.
Restart the computer if the issue persists.
Possible message displayed: Another Nexam tab is open. Close it before continuing.
What should I do if the issue persists?
If the issue continues after these checks, send the following information to technical support:
a screenshot of the message displayed;
the name of the requirement that is failing;
the browser you are using;
the type of device you are using.
This information will help the support team assist you more quickly.
