How do I disable Antidote, a grammar checker, or another assistive tool during an assessment?

Learn how to close or disable Antidote, Grammarly, LanguageTool, WordQ, Lexibar, or another tool when it is not authorized during a Nexam assessment.

Before disabling the tool

The use of a grammar checker or a reading or writing assistance tool depends on the rules established by your organization. If you are unsure whether the tool is permitted, review your assessment instructions or contact the person responsible for your assessment.

Important: Depending on the assessment settings, Nexam may control the spell checker built into your browser. However, the platform cannot disable external extensions or applications installed on your device.

Disable an extension in Google Chrome

If the tool is running as a Chrome extension:

  1. Click the puzzle-shaped Extensions icon in the upper-right corner of the browser

  2. Click Manage extensions

  3. Find Antidote, Grammarly, LanguageTool, or the relevant extension

  4. Turn off the extension

  5. Return to Nexam and refresh the page

You can also enter chrome://extensions in the Chrome address bar to access your extensions directly.

If your assessment has already started, do not close the Nexam window. Open the extensions page in a new tab instead.

Close an application on your computer

Some tools, such as Antidote, WordQ, or Lexibar, may run as applications installed on your computer.

On Windows

  1. Find the tool’s icon on the taskbar

  2. Right-click the icon

  3. Choose Close, Quit, Exit, or a similar option

  4. Return to Nexam and refresh the page

On Mac

  1. Find the tool in the Dock

  2. Right-click its icon

  3. Choose Quit

  4. Return to Nexam and refresh the page

Disable Chrome’s built-in spell checker

To disable Chrome’s spell checker:

  1. Open Chrome settings

  2. Go to Languages

  3. Find the Spell check section

  4. Turn off spell check

  5. Return to Nexam and refresh the page

If the tool is still active

The tool may be connected to your browser through another extension or may still be running in the background.

Make sure that:

  • All extensions associated with the tool are disabled

  • The application is completely closed

  • The Nexam page has been refreshed

If the extension is locked or cannot be disabled, your device may be managed by your school or employer. Contact your organization’s IT department or the person responsible for your assessment.
